Several people have suddenly become event planners especially in Lagos
State. Some weeks ago a friend of mine invited me to his house for a
heart-2-heart talk and during the cause of our discussion he told me how his
mother and girl friend have been on him asking him when is he getting married
and stuffs like that and how he is scared of wedding cost based on several
planners and people he as met, then I asked him which aspect of it are you
scared of the marriage or the wedding cost? then he said to me frankly, the
wedding cost and I asked him a basic question an event planner should ask
his/her client first like, if truly you wants to get married now "what is
your budget? And he said he can afford to spend N400k I further asked, to what
extent do you intend to spread your invitation I mean how many people will you
like to invite? And he said you know I'm a socialist and the number of people
he cannot be specific and I said you have to be specific. After several lecture
on budgeting and co. my friend took the bold step and now his married I mean,
happily married.
First I need you to understand there is a difference between "Planning
and Decoration" Event Planner organize every aspect (decoration, catering,
MC, DJ, live band etc) of event from start to finish while Decoration is
strictly based on beautification of the venue. Event Planning is more of time
management, budgeting and co-ordination while Decoration is creating a design(s)
suitable for the event location.
However, the problems of engaging an unqualified event planner to plan your
events (wedding, A.G.M, birthday etc) cannot be quantified. I have seen client
and her planner ended up in physical combat over a contract that was poorly
executed.
Therefore, it is very essential that clients and
planners agreed on every aspect of the deal and professionally delivered.
However, it is expected that a professional event planner advice his/her client
in a way that will reduce waste or unnecessary spending for instance, a client
can spend N1m on an event and every aspect of the wedding will not justify the
cost while another client can spend N300k and the result is massive, it's all
depends on the event planner. How professional is your Planner? How well do you
